US Treasury Sued Over Elon Musk’s DOGE Access

A major legal battle has erupted as Union groups take on the U.S. Treasury Department over allegations of unauthorized data sharing with Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. The controversy centers on claims of unprecedented access to sensitive financial and personal information of millions of Americans.

Legal Challenge and Privacy Concerns

The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) filed a lawsuit in Washington, DC federal court on February 3, targeting Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the department itself. At the heart of the dispute lies the alleged unauthorized sharing of confidential information, including Social Security numbers, banking details, and personal contact information of countless citizens.

The situation has quickly evolved into a political flashpoint, with prominent Democratic leaders voicing strong opposition. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced plans for new legislation to prevent what he termed “unlawful meddling” in Treasury payment systems. Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed particular concern about Musk’s potential access to sensitive data, suggesting it could be misused.

DOGE Authority Under Scrutiny

Questions have emerged about the legal standing of DOGE itself. Critics, including senior Democratic lawmakers, argue that the organization lacks proper governmental authority to access such sensitive information or make spending decisions. This challenge comes amid broader debates about federal spending reduction efforts under the current administration.

The controversy gained additional momentum following Senator Ron Wyden’s public disclosure on Bluesky about DOGE’s alleged “full access” to Treasury systems. As the situation develops, both the Treasury Department and the US DOGE Service have yet to provide official responses to these serious allegations.

The outcome of this legal challenge could set significant precedents for government data handling and private sector involvement in federal operations, particularly concerning privacy protections for citizen information.
